Anyone looking into the treatment of expression lines will inevitably come across the term Botox®. However, the name Vistabel® is sometimes mentioned in this context as well. This often leads to confusion and raises the question of whether it is a different, better or perhaps even worse product.

This glossary entry explains clearly and concisely what Vistabel® is and how it relates to Botox®.

What is Vistabel®?

Vistabel® is the trade name for a prescription-only medicine whose active ingredient is botulinum toxin type A.

It is manufactured by the global pharmaceutical company Allergan Aesthetics (a subsidiary of AbbVie Inc.) and is specifically authorised for use in aesthetic medicine, in particular for the treatment of expression lines such as the frown line (glabellar line) or crow’s feet.

Vistabel® vs. Botox®: What is the difference?

Although both Vistabel® and Botox® contain the same active ingredient – botulinum toxin type A, manufactured by Allergan – they differ in a number of respects:

• Amount of active ingredient: Vistabel® is specifically authorised for aesthetic use and contains a lower quantity of active ingredient per vial than Botox®, which is used for both medical and aesthetic purposes. This affects the dosage and method of administration.
• Manufacturing process: Vistabel® is manufactured using a vacuum-drying process, whilst Botox® (and other products such as Azzalure®) are predominantly lyophilised (freeze-dried). This has implications for storage and handling.
• Complex proteins: Both preparations contain complex proteins which are not essential for the therapeutic effect but may play a role in immunogenicity – particularly with regard to antibody formation during long-term use.

In Germany, the name „Vistabel®“ is used primarily for the product used for aesthetic purposes, whilst in other countries (e.g. the USA) the same product is marketed under the name „Botox Cosmetic®“. These differences in name are mainly due to regulatory and marketing strategy considerations, not to differences in the active ingredient or quality. It is therefore important for patients to know that, at its core, it is the same product.

2. The quality of the product With Vistabel® or Botox® from Allergan (as well as other products authorised in Germany, such as Dysport® or Xeomin®), you are receiving a highly pure, strictly controlled and time-tested medication that has been used millions of times. The dosage units for Vistabel® and Botox® are identical in Allergan products, which enables precise dosing.
3. Individual dosing Your doctor will tailor the amount (the „units“) precisely to your muscle strength and the desired result.
