The eyes are not only the window to the soul – they are also one of the parts of the face where the natural ageing process is most quickly apparent. No wonder, then, that eyelid lifts are among the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures. An upper or lower eyelid lift can correct dark circles, bags under the eyes and drooping eyelids, thereby giving the face a fresh new look.

An eyelid lift for a more alert look – what patients can expect during the operation

It is not only women, but also an increasing number of men worldwide who are opting for what is known as blepharoplasty to rejuvenate the dull and tired appearance of the eye area. Patients can choose between an upper eyelid lift and a lower eyelid lift, each of which can be performed on one or both sides and can also be combined:

Upper eyelid lift:
Upper eyelid lift surgery is frequently used to correct drooping eyelids or sagging eyebrows and takes around 45–60 minutes. During the procedure, the surgeon makes a fine incision in the eyelid crease to remove the excess skin and closes the incision with a barely visible suture.

Lower eyelid lift:
A lower eyelid lift can significantly reduce dark circles and bags under the eyes. During the procedure, both skin and fatty tissue are carefully removed, whilst the eye’s supporting structures are strengthened. The fine suture along the lash line is virtually invisible afterwards.

As an alternative to surgical eyelid lifting, blepharoplasty can also be carried out using laser techniques or a plasma pen.

An overview of the complications and risks associated with eyelid lifts

After the operation, you may experience the following symptoms, although these usually subside after a short time:

  • Puffiness around the eyes
  • Bruises
  • Dry eyes
  • Conjunctivitis

In some cases, long-term complications may also arise, requiring follow-up treatment:

  • Post-operative bleeding
  • Increased tear production
  • Infections
  • Wound-healing disorders
  • Proliferating scars
  • Permanent visual impairment

Unfortunately, even the most experienced surgeon cannot guarantee a flawless blepharoplasty – there is always a residual risk. However, with follow-up costs insurance for eyelid surgery, patients are at least well covered financially.

Insuring a blepharoplasty: the often-overlooked step towards financial security

First, the bad news: health insurance funds do not usually cover the costs of follow-up treatment after an eyelid lift – unless the original operation was medically necessary. If complications arise following a purely cosmetic procedure, patients are usually left to bear these costs themselves.

If the operation is purely cosmetic, patients bear the costs themselves. In this case, however, they must also cover the costs of any follow-up treatment that may be necessary due to complications – or they can take out insurance in advance to Aftercare insurance for your eyelid lift from.
